Frequently asked questions

What devices does VisionPlayer support?

VisionPlayer is a native visionOS app that runs on Apple Vision Pro with visionOS 26 or later.

Which video formats can I play?

VisionPlayer uses a hybrid two‑engine pipeline. Apple‑native formats (H.264, HEVC, MV‑HEVC Spatial Video, Apple Immersive Video, HLS) play through AVFoundation with full hardware acceleration. When AVFoundation can't decode a file, the app transparently falls back to a bundled FFmpeg engine that handles MKV, WebM, AVI, AV1, VP9, VC1, DTS audio, and more.

Supported projections include rectilinear, equirectangular (180° & 360°), fisheye, cubemap, Apple Immersive, and Parametric Immersive. Frame packings include mono, side‑by‑side, and over‑under.

How do I open a file that's on my computer or NAS?

You can play files from several sources: your Photos library, local files via the Files app, an HLS streaming URL, or by dragging a video onto a window. VisionPlayer also discovers nearby VisionPlayer Link servers on your local network using Bonjour.

My 3D video doesn't look right — how do I fix it?

VisionPlayer auto‑detects most immersive formats from filename hints (e.g. _360_sbs, _180_3dh, _fisheye) and from embedded metadata. If detection is wrong, open the player settings and manually pick the correct projection and frame packing (mono, side‑by‑side, or over‑under). Your choice is remembered per‑video.

The app says a file's format isn't supported. What can I do?

A "format not supported" error means neither AVFoundation nor the bundled FFmpeg engine could decode the file. This is rare, but usually indicates a corrupted container or an exotic codec. Try re‑exporting the file to H.264, HEVC, or AV1 in an MP4 or MKV container. If you believe the file should play, please send us a sample so we can investigate.

Do subtitles work?

Yes — VisionPlayer supports SRT sidecar files, WebVTT tracks in HLS streams, and embedded closed captions. You can also load an external subtitle file from the picker. Embedded ASS/SSA, PGS and VOBSUB subtitle tracks are currently detected but not yet rendered — this is on our roadmap.

How do I exit an immersive scene?

Press and hold the Digital Crown on Apple Vision Pro to exit any immersive space. You can also tap the exit control in the head‑anchored playback panel.

Does VisionPlayer sync across my Apple devices?

If you're signed in to iCloud, VisionPlayer syncs your favorites, playback history, resume positions, and per‑video settings across your devices via iCloud Key‑Value Storage. Nothing is uploaded to our servers because we don't run any. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Does VisionPlayer collect any personal data?

No. VisionPlayer does not collect any personal data, does not use analytics, does not show ads, and does not track you. All your playback state lives on your device (and in your own private iCloud store if you have iCloud enabled). See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

How is VisionPlayer licensed?

VisionPlayer is open source. The source code is available on GitHub.
