Privacy Policy
Vision Downloader works on your computer and nowhere else. To find and save videos it reads the pages you visit — the requests they make for video, their titles and a few frames, and a site's sign-in token when the site's player sends one — and it keeps your settings and download history in your browser. It sends nothing to us: there are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It talks only to the sites whose videos it finds. This page explains the details.
Contents
1. Who this policy applies to
This policy covers the Vision Downloader browser extension. It does not cover the websites you visit with it, which have their own policies.
2. What the extension reads
- The pages you visit, to find their videos: which requests a page makes for video, audio, playlists and subtitles, and the headers the site's own player sends with them; the page's title and address, its video poster and a few frames of the video that is playing, to name and preview each video in the list; and the player's settings in the page's scripts, which often name a video before it plays.
- A site's sign-in token, when its player sends one. Some players add a token to every request for their video (for example in an "Authorization" header), and the site's server refuses the video without it. The extension sends that token back only to the server it came from, only for a download you asked for. It never writes the token to your disk, never puts it in diagnostics and never sends it anywhere else.
- One piece of a page's text, if you ask for it: when one of your file-name rules names a part of a page to take a title from, the extension reads that part's text (at most 200 characters) to name the file.
All of this is held in your browser's memory, tab by tab. Some of it is kept in the browser's session storage, which also lives in memory, so that a video still on the page is not lost when the extension restarts in the background. Closing a tab drops what was read there, and the browser clears the rest when it closes. None of it is written to your disk.
For each site, the extension also remembers which way of asking its server for a video worked — for example, naming the page or the player as the referrer — so that the next download from that site asks the same way first. This holds the server's name and the way that worked — no address of a page or video, and no token — stays in memory until the browser closes, and is never taken from a private (incognito) window.
3. What it keeps, on your computer
- Your settings, including the folder you picked with Save as…, if you picked one: its name, and your browser's permission to save files into it.
- A history of your downloads — the file name and where it was saved, the title, site and page address, the video's own address (so that you can download it again), its format, quality and size, the date, and a small preview picture — if the history is on. It is on by default and can be turned off or cleared in the settings. Downloads from private (incognito) windows are never added.
- Downloads in progress, while they are being assembled.
All of this stays in your browser's own storage on your computer. Uninstalling the extension removes it.
4. What it sends, and to whom
- To the sites whose videos it finds: the requests needed to show a video in the list — its playlist, for the qualities on offer; the first bytes of a file, for its type and size; and, when no preview picture can be taken from the page itself, the video's first few seconds — and, for the video you choose, the requests needed to download it. They are made the way the site's own player makes them, with the headers it sent and the cookies your browser keeps for that site. The extension does not read those cookies.
- To us, or anyone else: nothing. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reports and no update checks of our own. We do not sell, share or transfer any data, because we have none.
The extension knows a few things about particular sites — for example, that it must not download from YouTube — from a file of rules that ships inside it. This version fetches no updates to those rules. If a later version does, this policy will say where from before it does, and that request will carry no information about you or your browsing.
5. Diagnostics you copy
When you click Copy diagnostics, the extension puts a report about the current tab on your clipboard: the page's title and address, the video addresses the extension found, the servers it asked and what they answered, and the names — never the values — of any headers the site's player sent. The report goes nowhere unless you paste it somewhere yourself. Video addresses can contain access codes: look the report over before you post it anywhere public, such as our issue tracker.
6. How the information is used
Vision Downloader's use of the information it handles complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The extension uses that information only to find the videos on the pages you visit and to save the ones you choose. It is never transferred or sold to anyone, never used for advertising, never used to judge creditworthiness or for lending, and never read by people — it never leaves your computer except in the requests to the sites described above.
7. Why it asks for its permissions
Videos can be on any site, so the extension can see the pages you visit; it uses that only to find their videos and fetch the one you choose. Its other permissions save files to your Downloads folder, keep your settings and history, and add the right-click menu and the side panel. Notifications are asked for only if you turn them on.
8. Children
The extension is not directed at children and sends no data about anyone to us.
9. Your choices
Everything the extension keeps is on your computer and under your control: close a tab to drop what was read there, turn the history off or clear it in the settings, or remove the extension to delete everything it stored. Because we hold no data about you, there is nothing for us to export or delete on request.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update it here, with a new "Last updated" date, before the version of the extension it applies to is published.
